Employment Agreements: Considerations for Independent Schools During the Hiring Season

Date: January 22 Time: 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Program

Cost: This event is being offered as a free education session.

Location Webinar

With the turn to the new calendar year, independent schools should start contemplating various hiring and renewal questions including, whether and how to ask current faculty members to commit to teach for another school year, what goes into deciding not to have other faculty members return, or the steps needed to extend job offers to new members of the school community.

In this engaging session, we will discuss how this annual tradition squares with the notion of at-will employment. Does your school employ faculty and staff at-will? Or do you use a contract for a specified term? Further, do your agreements go beyond the basics of employment and contain language and expectations tailored for an independent school environment, such as behavioral standards for working with students or the need to make employment conditioned on successful completion of various background checks or sufficient enrollment?

Join Brian Garrett, Sean LaPorta, and other members of McLane Middleton’s Education Law Group as they discuss with business officers and other school leaders the distinctive way in which independent schools employ faculty and staff, and provide a process of codifying the essentials in employment arrangements.
